Philip Hallman

Phil Hallman is the Film Studies Librarian/Selector and Reference Librarian for the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library where he is responsible for building and collecting the libraries’ books and periodicals related to cinema studies.  He also collaborates with Peggy Daub with two major collections held in the Hatcher Library Special Collections department related to the film auteurs/mavericks Orson Welles and Robert Altman.

In addition, he is the Head of the Donald Hall Collection, FTVM’s departmental film, DVD & screenplay collection.  The collection, named for former poet laureate Donald Hall, contains more than 20,000 DVDs, 3,000 screenplays and an archival film print collection.  He teaches various library research classes for the department and curates the Projectorhead film series sponsored by FTVM and the monthly Paley at Michigan TV series.

Phil has a background in film history and holds degrees in film studies and library science from the University of Michigan and NYU.  He has strong interests in film exhibition, particularly drive-in movie theaters, and film festivals.

Recently, he served as a juror in 2011 at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival in the American documentary category.  He presented a panel at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX entitled “Dig Deep:  Libraries, Archives and Filmmaking.”  He has also presented conferences papers at the 2011 and 2012 Society of Cinema and Media Studies Conferences “Uniform Sex: ‘Women in Uniforms’ Sexploitation Films, 1969-1979” (2011) & “From Drive-In to Drive-Thru:  How Drive-in Movie Theaters Changed Where (and What) We Eat.”  He is a member of the SCMS Media Archives committee. He has received a $5,000 research grant to pursue a project with colleague Nicole Scholtz and FTVM graduate student Ben Strassfeld entitled “Mapping the Motor Cities’ Cinemas.”  In September, 2012, he will accompany students to the Toronto International Film Festival.
