Professor Caryl Flinn recently published an essay entitled, "Werner Schroeter's Exotic Music and Margins" in Werner Schroeter (Filmmuseum Synema Publikationen, 2018). This anthology is the first book-length study to appear in English on the German director Werner Schroeter (1945-2010). Flinn’s chapter examines Schroeter's films’ collagist soundtracks of previously existing music -- taken from high opera to tourist tunes pulled from trash cans (yes, literally). She argues that his scores both engage and challenge Germany’s exoticizing fascination with Latin and Mediterranean cultures.
