Professor Johannes von Moltke's new article, "Alt-Right" and new media: To normalize right-wing populist propaganda" is now live on the German-language blog Geschichte der Gegenwart. In his article, von Moltke discusses the rise of the “alt-right” on social media during the 2010s, focusing in particular on the increasing normalization of right-wing populism. As the boundaries have eroded between Fox News, White House policy, and white supremacist manifestos on 4chan, the “alt-right” can claim to have succeeded in what they described from the outset as their “metapolitical’ battle to shift the discourse and influence politics with memes, tweets, and YouTube rants. He concludes that we need to strengthen alternatives to the “alt” of right wing populism.
