McDonough won the Best Director Award from the Long Island International Film Expo (July 13-30, 2017) for his film Groove, which chronicles New York City subway musicians and the unique lives they lead. Upon the film's debut this July, Ben Strack, of the LI Herald, interviewed Ryan about his work. McDonough claims, “I was inspired by the kind of indie film makers…who have the attitude of, ‘Don’t wait for someone to let you do something. Just go make it happen.'"
