GSI Hiring Information

Teaching is an important element of Department of Film, Television, and Media and GSI positions in courses taught by the department are assigned first to Department of Film, Television, and Media graduate students and those in our affiliated programs. Consequently, we rarely recruit students from outside this pool. If we do have positions available, they will be advertised university-wide via the Academic Human Resources process. Students can register to receive e-mail notices of new postings as they occur via the UM Jobs website.

Department of Film, Television, and Media Class Size Policy

The Department of Film, Television, and Media will set the enrollment capacity on GSI-taught sections of large lecture courses at no more than 25 students per section. Each GSI appointed to a large lecture course which includes GSI-taught discussion sections will be responsible for teaching two discussion sections. There will be a maximum of 25 students per each section. GSIs with a 50% appointment will teach two discussion sections per term. Therefore, the maximum ratio of students to a GSI will be no more than 50 students. The established enrollment capacity of 25 students will also include courses where a graduate student teaches a course as the instructor of record and is appointed as a GSI. The exception is ULWR designated courses, where a GSI will grade only. In this case, 30 students per section will be enrolled, with a GSI responsible for grading no more than 60 students in a given term. No GSI shall be required to accept enrollees in excess of the maximum class or section size.
