Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony

Families and Guests:
Tickets are NOT required for this free event.To ensure that all of our graduates are able to have family attend, we request that each graduating student limit the number of guests to no more than eight. Lobby doors will open to guests at 3:30 p.m. and guests should be seated by 3:45 p.m. Each graduate will be recognized by name as he or she cross the stage. Guests are welcome to take photographs during the ceremony from their seats however guests are not allowed to stand in the aisle, along the walls or move to the front at any time during the ceremony. These areas MUST remain clear for emergency purposes. NO helium balloons are allowed due to safety/fire concerns, but flowers are welcomed. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony in the Michigan Theater lobby and balcony.
Graduating Student Registration Information:
Students must RSVP by Monday, April 16th, 2018, in order to be included on the list of students participating in the ceremony. Please contact the Undergraduate Department if you have questions or concerns at 734-764-6330. Students, please check your permanent home address in Wolverine Access to insure it is correct for mailing out invitations to your family.
Students are requested to arrive in CAP and GOWN PROMPTLY at 3:00 p.m. at the Michigan Theater and proceed through the lobby towards the back to the Screening Room to register.
NO purses, back packs, totes, etc. will be allowed in the ceremony line or screening room. Please leave these items in your car or with a family member.
A professional photographer from Graduation Foto will be on hand to photograph each graduate as he or she cross the stage. In addition, a portrait of each graduate will be taken off stage. Graduation Foto will contact you directly by mail in regards to placing an order.
2018 English Department Commencement Speaker
Cecilia Muñoz is Vice President, Policy and Technology and Director of the National Network at New America. Prior to joining New America in 2017, she served on President Obama’s senior staff, first as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for three years, followed by five years as Director of the Domestic Policy Council. Prior to her work in government, she served for 20 years at the National Council of La Raza (now UNIDOS US), the nation’s largest Hispanic policy and advocacy organization, where she was Senior Vice President for the Office of Research, Advocacy and Legislation. She received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2000 for her work on immigration and civil rights, and serves on the Boards of the Open Society and Kresge Foundations, as well as the nonprofit United to Protect Democracy. Muñoz, a Detroit native and the daughter of immigrants from Bolivia, is also a wife and mother of two grown daughters. She lives with her husband in Maryland.
