Transfer Policies

The English Department does allow students to take and transfer courses from other institutions to UM for prerequisite and major credit through the departmental approval process below. Transfer courses may be applied toward your major, but at least 18 of your total 30 credits must be completed in residence (through the UM English Department).  Approval for credit of courses transferred from another institution (or Department) toward the English major must go through the below English Department Transfer Credit Evaluation Process.

Note:

  • Students may transfer no more than twelve (12) credits from other departments and universities towards the English major.
  • Students may transfer no more than three (3) credits from other departments and universities towards the English minor or Creative Writing minor.
  • Students may fulfill only one (1) English major/minor requirement (pre-1642, pre-1830, pre-1900, American Literature, Identity/Difference, Poetry) with transfer credit.
  • Prospective majors should note that no more than two courses (including transfer courses) in expository or creative writing may be counted toward the minimum 30 credits required for the English major.
  • A maximum of six credits (including transfer credits) of coursework at the 200-level may be counted toward the 30 credits required for the English major.
