Manuscripts-in-Progress: “Some of us are dogs on the verge of speaking”, a collection of creative nonfiction essays; “Sanctuary”, a poetry collection; creative flash nonfiction, experimental narratives, placed in Washington and Michigan.
Inside and outside the classroom, Allen advocates for student success and life-long learning; writing as a means of engaging meaningfully across the curriculum and outside the academy; community-based learning to transform student and instructor dialogue and engagement; writing and critical thinking as practices of good citizenship; and practical application of effective learning theory. Allen attended Seattle University where she earned a BA in English and completed ABD in Pastoral Ministry at Seattle University’s graduate Institute for Theological Studies. She has taught writing courses and workshops in U of M’s Department of English Language and Literature; English Department Writing Program; Sweetland Center for Writing; Great Books courses in the Honors Program; and in U of M’s experiential education program, New England Literature Program. Home base is in the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP), where she teaches writing and race and ethnicity courses full time. Other activities include volunteer tutoring, mentoring, and developing community-based learning courses and workshops.
