Solidarity statement
We, the undersigned members of the English Department, stand in solidarity with our Black and Latinx students, and condemn in the strongest possible terms the hateful acts that have occurred over the past several weeks. Perpetrators have attacked students in the street, subjected students to verbal assaults, denigrated students’ dorm placards with racist messages, and vandalized campus landmarks with racist and xenophobic graffiti. Our signatories hail from many constituencies — undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, staff, lecturers, and tenure-track faculty. As a collective of individuals who study language, rhetoric, and power, we know that racial epithets, violent imagery, and repulsive messages have material and egregious consequences, and we offer our support to those whose safety and bodily well-being have been threatened. These words are not insignificant. These violent overtures are not insignificant. Your lives are not insignificant. As other departments and units (e.g., DAAS, Latina/o Studies) have noted in their solidarity statements, these incidents are but the most recent in a string of hatefully charged events that have transpired over the past year, including incidents that have targeted Muslim and Arab- American students, as well as other students of color. We forcefully reject racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-semitism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, ableism, and injustice in all forms. As a collective, we join our students and colleagues in pressing university administration to fast and responsive action.
