Jeffrey Yang is the author of four books of poetry: Hey, Marfa (winner of the Southwest Book Award); Vanishing-Line; An Aquarium (winner of the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award), and the recently published Line and Light. He is the translator of Bei Dao’s autobiography City Gate, Open Up; Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Liu Xiaobo’s June Fourth Elegies; Ahmatjan Osman’s Uyghurland, the Farthest Exile; and Su Shi’s East Slope. He has edited the poetry anthologies Birds, Beasts, and Seas and Time of Grief, a volume of Walt Whitman’s poetry and prose, The Sea Is a Continual Miracle, and an expanded edition of Mary Oppen’s Meaning a Life: An Autobiography. Yang was a 2017–2018 DAAD artist-in-residence in Berlin. He is the editor-at-large for New Directions Publishing.

At New Directions he has edited books of poetry, fiction, and essays by a number of authors including Yoko Tawada, Gennady Aygi, Nathaniel Mackey, Nina Berberova, Rosmarie Waldrop, Sylvia Legris, Pamela Mordecai, Ernesto Cardenal, Qian Zhongshu, George Oppen, Ah Cheng, Eliot Weinberger, Mu Xin, Dunya Mikhail, Will Alexander, Xi Chuan, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, Tomas Tranströmer, Helen DeWitt, Amhed Bouanani, Sonallah Ibrahim, Abdelfattah Kilito, Yevgenia Belorusets, Nathaniel Tarn, Adonis, Fran Ross, Takashi Hiraide, H. D., Alejandra Pizarnik, Elizabeth T. Gray, Jr., Hans Faverey, Luljeta Lleshanaku, Tu Fu, Michael Palmer, Marry Oppen, Louis Zukofsky, Osip Mandelstam, Oliverio Girondo, Hiroaki Sato, and others. He has edited two poetry anthologies for the press as well as the new series of New Directions Poetry Pamphlets.

He also edits books (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, children’s books) for New York Review Books and helped start the NYRB Poets series. There, he has worked on titles by Honoré de Balzac, Silvina Ocampo, Slavko Goldstein, Simone Schwarz-Bart, Darius James, Elizabeth Willis, Vivek Narayanan, Alexander Vvdensky, Sakutarō Hagiwara, Najwan Darwish, Raúl Zurita, Li Shangyin, Louise Labé, Pierre Reverdy, A. K. Ramanujan, Walt Whitman, J. H. Prynne, Joan Murray, Miguel Hernández, Ji Xianlin, Otfried Preussler, Anna Seghers, Robert Bresson, Ge Fei, Eileen Chang, Qiu Miaojin, and others.
