The English for Business Studies (EBS) program is a dynamic online English language program designed for students who have been accepted into Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Our project-based curriculum challenges you with cutting-edge course content that prepares you to thrive in your MBA program. You will engage in demanding reading, speaking and writing tasks, and get individualized feedback along the way. You will have the opportunity to tackle real-world business issues, work individually and collaboratively, think creatively to solve problems, and present your solutions in a final team project. You will also learn about U.S. academic culture and develop a social network so you are prepared to hit the ground running in your MBA program and beyond.
By participating in EBS, you will be more confident and prepared for the rigors of the MBA program and beyond. Specifically, you will:
Learn language and content typical in an MBA program
Build your case analysis skills and practice them in a mock class led by a Ross Business School professor
Develop strategies for interacting effectively and working collaboratively in a diverse, global team
Learn how to adjust your message for different audiences, situations, and purposes
Become more aware of personal strengths and weaknesses, and how to leverage them for success
Improve your time-management and virtual communication skills
Become familiar with U.S. business school culture, including its growing emphasis on positive business practices
Make friends and begin to build social and professional networks
Our specialized Business English curriculum has been developed by ELI faculty and business scholars to meet the needs of students at top U.S. MBA programs.
EBS is structured to ensure that all course materials and activities are broadly accessible to globally dispersed students via asynchronous content delivery which allows you to complete coursework at any time of the day or night as long as you meet weekly deadlines.
The program also builds community through highly individualized contact between faculty and students via optional synchronous elements in which students are invited to meet and interact in real time. You will be paired weekly with a Study Buddy for peer academic support and additional language practice, and will work in teams to complete a project to improve your virtual collaboration skills.
EBS includes the following course components:
Team Building Skills
EBS also offers individualized language support in real time via optional Pronunciation Consultations with an ELI faculty member.
You should expect to spend 10-12 hours each week to complete all program assignments, including participation in online discussions and team tasks. A certificate of completion is awarded to participants who fulfill all program requirements.
A variety of articles, case studies, and other resources will be provided to students on Canvas, UM’s learning management platform.
