About the Program
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is designed for graduate students who will be starting degree programs at the University of Michigan or other top universities in the U.S. In the Summer of 2020, this program will be offered fully online.
In EAP, you will improve your ability to use English in a university environment, enhance your understanding of U.S. academic culture, and learn about life on campus at the University of Michigan. You will also learn more about yourself and how to make the most of your educational experience.
In this fully online program, all course materials and activities are structured with a global audience in mind and will be delivered asynchronously. This means that you can complete coursework at any time during the week no matter what time zone you are in, as long as you meet weekly deadlines.
This required coursework will be supplemented by optional synchronous meetings in small and large groups, in which you will have many opportunities to interact with your instructors and classmates in real time. Optional individual speaking consultations will provide additional language practice and feedback in real time.
Important note: The EAP Summer Program prepares newly-admitted graduate students for study and scholarship at the University of Michigan. It is not designed to provide teacher preparation for GSIs who will be teaching in classrooms and labs. For information about these resources, please visit ELI's GSI Program page.
Join other new Michigan graduate students in this interactive and engaging online program. You will build friendships and begin to build a social network before you arrive on campus. You will gain insight into U.S. culture, make friends, and get to know the Ann Arbor area virtually.
Specifically, you will:
Improve your spoken and written English, in particular your ability to follow standard conventions of academic writing
Identify and correct your own errors in speaking and writing
Practice introducing your academic persona via short presentations
Develop strategies to establish yourself as a member of an academic community
Recognize important aspects of American academic culture
Learn about life and culture on the U-M campus
Become familiar with U-M resources to support your scholarship when you arrive on campus
Make friends and begin to build social and professional networks
Summer 2020 EAP Online is built on the ELI’s renowned research-based English for Academic Purposes curriculum in order to prepare students for study at top U.S. research universities. It includes the following course components:
Introduction to Academic Writing
Introduction to Academic Speaking
Language, Culture, and Community at the University of Michigan
You should expect to spend 12-15 hours each week to complete all program assignments, including participation in online discussions and group tasks. Class size is limited to maximize interaction and instructor contact. Student-teacher conferences provide participants with extensive individual attention. A certificate of completion is awarded to participants who fulfill all program requirements.
