Who is Eligible

The English Language Institute (ELI) Summer Programs are designed for students who will be studying at the University of Michigan or another  U.S. university in the fall. We do not accept students who plan to study English only for the summer and then return home. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved in advance by the ELI Director and the appropriate U-M Admissions Office.

Applicants who will be attending the University of Michigan in the Fall will be accepted as long as we receive your application, letter of admission, and deposit before the application deadline.

Non- U-M students are admitted on a space-available basis and must meet all program requirements, including minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Space is limited in ELI Summer Programs, so while we make every effort to admit all qualified applicants, this is not always possible. Therefore, you should apply as soon as possible to reserve your place.

Minimum TOEFL* Score Requirements

Applicants to ELI Summer Programs who have not been accepted into a degree program at the University of Michigan must meet the following TOEFL requirements:

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) 560 84 6.5
English for Business Studies (EBS) [not accepted by U-M Ross Business School] 100 7

*Other accepted tests include MELAB, ECPE, CPE, CAE. Please contact us for details.

When will you hear from us?

Within five business days of receipt of your application, you will receive an email from us which will indicate if any information is still needed in order to process your application.

Applicants who will be attending the University of Michigan in the Fall will be accepted as long as we receive your application, letter of admission, and deposit before the application deadline.
