The ELI Student Spotlight series is designed to highlight students who demonstrate outstanding commitment and enthusiasm in ELI courses.
Meet Xiong Zeng! Xiong was nominated by his instructors, Trisha Dowling and Judy Dyer, in his ELI 541 course, Culture and Communication in the US., during the Winter 2024 semester. Trisha describes Xiong as a student who constantly challenged himself and others by thoughtfully and respectfully discussing difficult topics. Xiong is actively involved in the local running community, competing and volunteering at races. Moreover, Judy notes that Xiong is always mindful of others and strives to learn about people different from himself. His goal in both his research and volunteer work is to help and support others. He served as an inspiration in the class with his positive outlook on life and his kind demeanor.
Name: Xiong Zeng
Hometown: Loudi, Hunan
Country: China
Degree Program: Phd in Electrical and Computer Engineering
What inspired you to take a class at the English Language Institute?
I want to improve my English communication skills and learn more about the cultural differences between different countries. And the elegant teaching styles of the instructors of ELI also attract me.
What have you enjoyed the most about your experience with ELI's resources? Why?
ELI 541: Culture and Communication in the U.S. taught by Trisha and Judy had the greatest impact on me. We discussed many interesting and important topics from different cultural perspectives. I learned a lot from the discussions about American culture, the culture of my home country (China), myself, and the culture of other countries. I also learned a lot from the teachings of the instructors, for example, how to speak appropriately in a multicultural context to make your audiences feel comfortable and respected. This course influenced my career pursuits to a certain extent. I want to be more involved in social activities in the future. Later I joined Wolverine Support Network to try to provide my help to the community.
What do you hope to do after graduating from Michigan?
After receiving my PhD, I will be looking for a postdoctoral position and then a faculty position. The learning experience at ELI made me realize the importance, joy, and glory of being an excellent teacher.
What advice would you give to other international students at U-M?
For international students, adapting to a new environment always faces various challenges, such as language barriers and various cultural shocks. Attending as many ELI events and classes as possible can make your life easier.
