What motivated you to enroll in the Summer EAP program?
Chongpeng: As an international student, even though I have met the language requirement for the University of Michigan, I was still worried that I would have difficulty understanding what the professors said in class at the beginning of the semester. So I hoped to use the Summer EAP program to improve my English skills and get familiar with the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor.
Ayuka: I wanted to learn English, make friends, and get used to Ann Arbor before the semester started.
What did you enjoy most about the Summer EAP program? Why?
Chongpeng: My favorite thing about Summer EAP is that I got to meet students from all over the world. During these 6 weeks, I had many opportunities to learn about their culture and even learn a little bit of their language!
What did you find most valuable about the poster presentation experience?
Ayuka: I was able to learn how to conduct a research project which is necessary for graduate students. We learned how to complete the whole research process on our own, including how to decide the theme, design the survey, make a poster, and do the presentation. I used a lot of skills I learned during the Summer EAP program.
What advice would you give to incoming international students at U-M?
Chongpeng: Be prepared to study very hard. As an international student, you will need to spend more time completing assignments than local students. At the same time, don’t miss any opportunity to improve your abilities.
Ayuka: I think coming to UMich as an international student is super exciting, but it also makes you nervous. Summer EAP is a great program to meet new students from different countries and disciplines! I hope you will join to have exciting experiences and develop confidence for your new university life!
What do you hope to do after graduating from U-M?
Chongpeng: I will try to continue my studies and pursue a PhD degree.
Ayuka: I want to go back to Japan and work for a company which makes a big contribution to society. Eventually, I hope to come back to America as an expat.
