Welcome to ELI
The English Language Institute (ELI) is an academic department in U-M's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts that serves students, scholars, researchers, staff, and post-docs at the University of Michigan. ELI provides a full range of English for Academic Purposes graduate courses and other types of language and academic support for international students and scholars. We also offer language and pedagogy courses for current and prospective international GSIs and TESOL courses that prepare students to teach English in local communities or abroad.
*NOTE: ELI's courses and other resources are open only to current members of the University of Michigan community. We do not provide language instruction or conditional admission to the university. For click here information about U-M admission requirements.
Graduate Students
The ELI offers Academic English courses and workshops for international graduate students and other speakers of English as an additional language. The ELI also offers Graduate Language Clinics which provide international graduate students, GSIs, scholars, faculty, and staff with one-on-one language and academic support. Clinics are staffed by ELI lecturers or by GSIs working under close supervision of experienced faculty.
Resources for International Scholars, Researchers, Faculty, Staff, and Post-Docs
The ELI offers non-credit courses and other resources to help international Scholars, Researchers, Faculty, Staff and Post-Docs increase their confidence using English and thus maximize their professional contributions during their stay at the University of Michigan and beyond.
