Thomas S. Mullaney, Associate Professor of Chinese History at Stanford University considered the history of the Chinese typewriter -- as a technological and cultural phenomenon inside and outside of China -- in his December 4 lecture for the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. His talk, "On the Apotheosis of the Typewriter and the Xenogenesis of Chinese," continued the Institute's 2013-15 theme, "Materials of History." The talk is available online as an MP3 audio file to University of Michigan account holders (link here to access).

On December 5, Professor Mullaney joined Joseph Ho, Emma Nolan-Thomas, and Kate Wroblewski at the graduate student workshop, "Translating Bodies / Transfiguring Knowledge," chaired by Leslie Pincus.
