Film screening

Please join us for a public screening of "The Pantoms of Lovanium" (dir. Ccil Michel, 2012), a documentary film on popular painting and the memory of violence in Kinshasa, DRC.

"The Phantoms of Lovanium" documents a painting performance on the campus of the University of Kinshasa by Congolese artist Sapin Makengele. The film also captures the reactions of various onlookers as they gather to observe Makengele painting a work about a student massacre in Kinshasa in 1969.

The film will be screened on Friday February 20 at 4:00pm in MLB2. A Q&A with filmmaker Ccil Michel will follow the screening.

Makengele will be present on campus the following week to produce a new painting in a public performance at the Institute for the Humanities and the University of Michigan Museum of Art, from Monday 23 to February 27.

These events are made possible through the generous support of the Department of History, the Department of African-American and African Studies, the Department of Screen Arts and Cultures, the Department of the History of Art, the African Studies Center, the Institute for the Humanities, the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Center for World Performance Studies, the International Institute, and the University of Michigan Office for Research.
