True to tradition, the day of the EEB annual spring picnic dawned rainy but before picnic time, the rain had subsided. Unlike many recent picnics, however, rather than a chilly spring day, temperatures pleasantly rose into the 70s and the sun even made a brief guest appearance.

A great turnout of faculty, students, postdocs, staff, their families, including many young children, and friends celebrated another successful academic year. The picnic was held at Island Park in Ann Arbor along the bank of the Huron River.

EEB Professor and Chair Diarmaid Ó Foighil announced new babies and student awards, including the coveted best paper award, which went to Brian Metzger for his Nature paper, “Selection on noise constraints variation in a eukaryotic promoter.” Web news about the paper is forthcoming with further information.

Congratulations to all and special thanks to the social committee for their efforts in creating an all-around fun affair. The social committee includes: Dr. Laura Eidietis, Nicholas Van Dyke, Michael Ehnis, Samantha Winder, Leslie Decker, Professor John Vandermeer. Additionally, thanks to Nancy Smith for picking up the delicious cake and to everyone who pitched in to clean up.

Happy spring!
