AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program - This 10-week summer program places science, engineering, and mathematics students at media organizations nationwide. Fellows use their academic training as they research, write, and report today’s headlines, sharpening their abilities to communicate complex scientific issues to the public.

The American Livebearer Association’s Vern Parish Award for outstanding college and graduate student research in the area of livebearing fish.

AMS Graduate Fellowships are available to students entering their first year of graduate school, and are pursuing a related full-time course of study in atmospheric, oceanic or hydrologic sciences over a full academic year. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status.

The AMNH Grants Program offers modest short term awards to advanced students, postdoctoral trainees, and scientific researchers who are commencing their careers in the fields covered by AMNH. Grants are available from four funds, each having specific missions and generally range between $500 and $3,500.

ASM is deeply committed to training future generations of mammalogists. This includes offering multiple sources of financial support to students engaged in research on mammals. It also includes travel funds to promote student presentations at the Society’s annual meeting. A list of funding opportunities available to ASM members is listed here. 

AWCF provides grants supporting research and public education towards enhancing scientific wildlife management, and conservation of wild habitats in North America.

The Animal Behavior Society offers several grants to support graduate student research. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program and must be active members of the Animal Behavior Society.

The Grants Program supports research directly tied to CTFS-ForestGEO Forest Dynamics Sites, including projects requiring field work, plot data analysis, or the generation of complementary data that strengthens CTFS-ForestGEO programs. Projects can be field-oriented, herbarium- or laboratory-based, or analytical. Research projects can be basic or applied in nature and based around the social or natural sciences. Project duration can range from 3 months to 2 years.

The Chicago Zoological Society administers the Endangered Species Fund, which supports conservation-oriented research. The Fund will support small projects usually up to $5,000.

The Exploration Fund Grant is for graduate, post-graduate, doctorate and early career post-doctoral students. It provides grants in support of exploration and field research for those who are just beginning their research careers. Awards range from $500 to $5,000.

The GCA now offers 27 merit based scholarships, fellowships and awards in the areas of horticulture and its related disciplines, botany, including medicinal and tropical, native bird habitat, conservation and ecological restoration, desert studies, landscape architecture, urban forestry, garden history and design, coastal wetlands, and pollinator research. 

Great Lakes Commission-Sea Grant Fellowship is for graduate students in a marine or aquatic-related field.

The Lewis and Clark Fund encourages exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation. Applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as archeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology, linguistics, paleontology, and population genetics, but grants will not be restricted to these fields. Grants are available to doctoral students and typically ranger from several hundred dollars up to $5,000.

The zoo is committed to training young scientists to conduct independent research projects that are relevant to the management and conservation of captive and wild populations. Several of our staff scientists hold adjunct positions at the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago where they supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. NOAA Student Opportunities website is designed to provide information about educational opportunities that are available throughout NOAA. On this site, you can find information on scholarships, internships, fellowships and post docs, including a brief description of each program, the application deadline, award amount, dates of the opportunity, contact e-mail address and a link to the website.

The New England Botanical Club offers each year up to $3,000 total in support of botanical research to be conducted by graduate students. The awards are made to stimulate and encourage botanical research on the New England flora (plants, algae, and fungi), including support for field work or herbarium visits in New England by those who would not otherwise be able to travel to the region.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi’s ongoing commitment to excellence is reflected in its award and grant programs. More than $1 million is awarded every two years to outstanding members and chapters through the Society’s various award competitions. 

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided students with valuable educational experiences since 1922. By encouraging close working relationships between students and mentors, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning. The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering.

The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program supports independent research and study related to Smithsonian facilities, experts, or collection for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.

The Sophie Danforth Conservation Biology Fund (SDCBF) supports conservation programs that protect threatened wildlife and habitats worldwide. Field studies and other projects that demonstrate a multi-disciplinary approach to biodiversity and ecosystem conservation and projects that involve in-country collaborators receive the highest funding priority. Environmental education programs, development of techniques that can be used in a natural environment, and captive propagation programs that stress an integrative approach to conservation are also appropriate. Projects must directly affect biological conservation.
