Submission of official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores is normally required for MAE program applicants; however, due to difficulties in test scheduling caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, GRE scores will be optional for Fall 2021 applications. Applicants may still submit GRE scores if they wish, but it is not required. If a GRE score report is submitted, it will be considered as one part of a holistic evaluation of the application. This change applies only for Fall 2021 applications.

Applicants who wish to submit a GRE score report (General Test) should use the University of Michigan institution code 1839. The GRE report should be received by the application deadline, January 15th. Because some test centers may be closed, the GRE General Test at home version will also be accepted.

Must international applicants submit a TOEFL/IELTS score for admission?

Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency, unless they meet one of the criteria for an exemption. For detailed information about which test scores are accepted and the Rackham Graduate School's minimum score requirements for admission consideration, please review the information here

To qualify for an exemption, the applicant must have completed their entire undergraduate studies (typically 4 years) in the U.S. or other English-speaking country (e.g. Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand).
