The University of Michigan Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences was recently recognized as one of the top earth science programs in the United States by US News and World Report, receiving its #6 ranking. For the first time, all of our specialties–Geophysics, Environmental Sciences, Geochemistry, Geology, and Paleontology–were ranked. We are pleased Michigan EARTH has again been recognized for excellence in higher education and research.
These rankings were based exclusively on the results of surveys sent in fall 2021 and early 2022 to academic officials in earth sciences. The survey rated program quality on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). The schools with the highest average scores were sorted in descending order from highest numerical rank to lowest numerical rank.
