Brian Arbic and Adam Simon organized and taught parts of the Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School (COESS) in Accra, Ghana. More than 100 Ghanaian undergraduate and graduate students from six different universities as well as professionals from the Ministry of Petroleum and other government agencies learned about a range of topics including offshore oil and natural gas development (a new and growing industry in Ghana), coastal oceanography, climatology, and fisheries. The school was run with a healthy mixture of lectures and hands-on learning components to maximize student involvement and learning outcomes. Arbic and Simon have funding to run the summer school again in 2017 and are hoping to find financial support to allow the school to continue beyond next year.
