The Distinguished Alumni Award honors graduates of the Department of the Earth and Environmental Sciences who have distinguished themselves through their professional achievements, service to the department, and contributions to society.
John Greene has Bachelor of Science degree ('63) from the University of Michigan. He served as a naval officer on destroyers in the Pacific Fleet for five years before returning to the University of Michigan where he earned his Master’s Degree in Geology in 1970.
John worked in the Oil and Gas industry for Conoco, MilestonePetroleum (Burlington Resources) and the Louisiana Land and Exploration Company. His industry career began as a geoscientist in exploration and progressed into management with increasing responsibilities in both domestic and international business arenas.
John has served as a Corporate Director for El Paso Exploration Company, Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Basin Exploration, Mariner Energy and Leaf River Resources. Additionally, has served in various capacities with the Earth Sciences Resources Institute, the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the American Petroleum Institute.
John was a member of the first Department of Geosciences Alumni Advisory Board. He served seven years on the LS&A Dean’s Advisory Council at the University of Michigan
Today John lives with his wife Dianna in Littleton, Colorado. He is actively involved in non-profit organizations that focus on at risk youth. He has served on the Community Advisory Board of the Ridge View Academy and Betty Marler School both Charter schools for incarcerated teenagers. Currently he serves as Board Chair of Friends for Youth an organization that provides adult mentors for at risk youth in Colorado.
