The University of Michigan Earth and Environmental Sciences Alumni Advisory Board is composed of several alumni of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences who are nominated by mutual consent of the Department and existing Board, and are appointed for five- year terms. Membership may also include individuals who, though not Michigan alumni, can nevertheless offer special advice and input to the Board and Department. The Board elects a Chair from among those members having at least one year prior Board experience. Once elected, the Chair normally serves until expiration of his/her full term on the Board. The Chair's responsibilities are to chair the annual fall meetings and to serve as the principal liaison between the Department and the Board members throughout the year.

Board members and their spouses convene annually in Ann Arbor on pre-selected dates, normally in or about the first week in October. Activities typically begin with an informal reception with students on Thursday evening and end with a Michigan football game that Saturday. The primary and essential event is a Friday business meeting. At these meetings, the Department Chair and/or several other faculty members are present to inform the Board of new developments. Each Board member is asked to attend these fall meetings in the course of his/her five-year term and, if possible, to appear at annual meetings (GSA, AAPG), Geoalumni receptions, or other alumni functions when held in or near their places of residence.
