Brought to you by the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), GalleryDAAS celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip hop with “Hip Hop @ 50,” a new exhibition highlighting this constantly evolving phenomenon. Explore various aspects of hip hop culture, including definitions, dates, divas, the Detroit scene, and a special tribute to J Dilla (James Dewitt Yancey), a prolific producer. Through examining the five pillars of hip hop — rapping, break dancing, DJing, graffiti and historical knowledge — it becomes evident that what began as a musical genre has impacted society, fashion, language, entertainment and even politics.
