What is the Summer Bridge Scholars Program?
The Summer Bridge Scholars Program (SBSP) is limited to a select group of students each year. Now in its forty-third, the Summer Bridge Scholars Program offers intensive academic preparation, highly individualized academic advising and the personal attention of faculty in an intensive, yet nurturing environment during the summer. Bridge scholars have an excellent opportunity to strengthen their academic skills, develop a peer support network and to familiarize themselves with the campus and its resources.
Bridge scholars enroll in three University of Michigan courses: writing, mathematics, and a first-year seminar. These courses are credit-bearing, academically rigorous courses and become part of the scholar’s official University of Michigan transcript. Also, each Bridge scholars is assigned an Academic Advisor. This advisor will serve as a resource for course selection and scheduling, career planning, and all other academic matters from the scholar’s orientation until they graduate.
How was I chosen for the Summer Bridge Scholars Program?
Staff from the University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions make determinations for SBSP based on their review of a wide range of variables including GPA, test scores, grades in college preparatory courses, writing samples and letters of recommendation. Your participation in SBSP will provide you with the opportunity to develop additional skills and insights deemed important to your academic success at Michigan.
How will the Summer Bridge Scholars Program benefit me?
Participation in SBSP develops skills and insights central to academic success at Michigan. Enrollment in SBSP also allows you to familiarize yourself with the campus and identify offices which can provide you with useful information about the University of Michigan. Moreover, a successful student enrollment in SBSP can earn 9 credit hours towards graduation from the University of Michigan.
Upon completion of SBSP, scholars are eligible to apply to Bridge Scholars PLUS (BSP), a program designed to assist scholars in major exploration, experiential learning, and academic success. Scholars have the opportunity to continue with BSP through their senior year and gain numerous experiences from faculty and alumni mentorships, exclusive scholarship funding, community support, student leadership positions, and much much more.
What is the cost of the Summer Bridge Scholars Program?
The cost for participating in SBSP depends on whether you are considered an (in-state) resident of the State of Michigan or a (out-of-state) non-resident. In the summer of 2018 Michigan residents paid approximately $7,383 and non-residents paid approximately $15,545 which includes tuition, fees, room and board, the cost of books, and personal expenses. Please note 2019 costs will be posted on the Office of Financial Aid website as soon as they become available. Financial Aid is available to meet or assist with program costs for students who qualify. When will I receive more information about the Summer Bridge Scholars Program?
Information about the Summer Bridge Scholars Program was included in your admission packet. Starting in January and February, correspondence with specfic details about the Summer Bridge Schoalrs Program will be sent to scholars via the email address scholars used when applying for admission to the University of Michigan. Scholars indicate their acceptance of the offer of admission by payment of the enrollment deposit. Requests for an enrollment deposit waiver can be made on the Undergraduate Admissions Enrollment Deposit website (scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Students With Financial Inability to Pay the EDR").
How do I obtain my student ID (MCard) and uniqname in preparation for the Summer Bridge Scholars Program?
In order for an incoming scholar to obtain a uniqname they must be a matriculated scholar or have paid their enrollment deposit. The scholar will receive an email message inviting them to create their own uniqname via the web. This email is sent to the email address used when the scholar applied for admission to the University of Michigan. If an email address is not available, a letter will be sent to the home address with directions.
Scholars will be asked to submit a photo to the MCard office prior to coming to campus; this photo will be used for their MCard. Scholars will receive theri free MCard upon check-in to the program on June 29. Those who have not submitted a photo prior to June 21 will have a photo taken during orientation, which will delay receipt of their MCard. Scholars must have paid an enrollment deposit before the MCard will be generated.
As a Summer Bridge scholar should I register for orientation with New Student Programs?
No, scholars do not need to register for orientation with New Students Program. As a scholar within the Summer Bridge Scholars Program, you will participate in the full orientation program upon your arrival, from June 29 - July 2. During orientation scholars will meet with their assigned academic advisor and will register for summer courses.
Do I need to submit an immunization record? If so, where should it be sent to?
It is recommended that all incoming students provide the university with their immunization record. The information must include the student's name and date of birth. The records should be sent directly to University of Health Service by mail (207 Fletcher Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, ATTN: HIMS) or fax (734-936-3063).
When do I start?
The Summer Bridge Scholars Program begins with move-in day on Saturday, June 29, 2019. This will be the first day of a mandatory four day orientation program. Scholars will be provided individual move-in times via email. Classes begin early Wednesday morning, July 3, 2019 and the program ends on Tuesday, August 20, 2019.
When do I register for fall courses?
In early July scholars will meet with their Academic Advisor to start "backpacking" their classes for the fall semester. Backpack is a feature available in Wolverine Access that works much like the "shopping carts" you may see on many retail websites. With Backpack scholars can prepare for their upcoming registration appointment by filling it with classes they want to take. With the assistance of their academic advisor, scholars will register for the courses they have backpacked.
What courses are offered during the Summer Bridge Scholars Program?
During SBSP, scholars will enroll in three summer courses that consist of a first-year seminar (CSP 100), a writing course (CSP 105), and a math course (Math 103 or Math 104). Math and writing placement is determined by placement exams taken online via myGuide and during the SBSP orientation.
What programs and activities will I attend during SBSP?
During SBSP scholars will participate in mandatory activities that are associated with their CSP 100 course. Mandatory events are scheduled for the following dates. Additional information about mandatory events will be provided upon scholars' arrival on June 29.

Do parent(s)/guardian(s) have to attend the parent orientation?
Participation in the parent and family orientation program, which will be held on June 29 from 1:00PM - 5:00PM, is encouraged. If parent(s)/guardian(s) have questions regarding the program they are welcome to contact us at email@example.com.
I plan to audition for the U-M Marching Band, is there an opportunity during orientation to attend an audition?
Scholars who wish to audition for the U-M Marching Band may do so as part of the SBSP orientation program.
Should I bring a vehicle to campus?
Scholars should not bring a vehicle to campus during the Summer Bridge Scholars Program. All courses are within walking distance of the residence hall and near public transporation to assist scholars in getting to their destination. Take some time to review U-M Transportation Services bus routes and schedules, and Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority MRide Program and routes and schedules. Additional transportation information and assistance will be provided upon scholars arrival.
Can I work a part-time job while in the Summer Bridge Scholars Program?
Scholars should not obtain a part-time job during the 7-week program. Due to the requirements and schedule of the program there is not time available to work a part-time job. FAQs - Admissions
Where do I submit my final high school transcript?
Scholars or their high schools can submit their final high school grades/transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. If a school is unable to submit a scholars transcript before June 24, 2019 they can bring a hard copy of their final report card or transcript with them on move-in day on Saturday, June 29th. Admissions representatives will be present on to collect these documents.

When is the enrollment deadline?
All scholars planning to attend the Summer Bridge Scholars Program and the University of Michigan must submit a $300 enrollment deposit by May 1, 2019.
Requests for an enrollment deposit waiver can be made on the Undergraduate Admissions Enrollment Deposit website (scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Students Wtih Financial Inability to Pay the EDR").
Where do I view my financial aid packet be available to view?
Once scholars have paid their enrollment deposit and submitted their FASFA, they can log into Wolverine Access and head to the New & Prospective Student Center, where they can locate the following financial information:
- Financial Aid Document Status: See what documents you have submitted and what other documents are needed to complete your financial aid application for a given year.*
- Financial Aid Award Summary: View the financial aid awards you have received for the coming year.*
- Financial Aid Award Notices: View and print your financial award notice (or estimated award notice).* You can also save a copy of the award notice file for emailing or printing.
- Accept/Decline Financial Aid: Select this option to accept, decline, or reduce aid that you have received for a given year.
- Report Additional Aid: Select this option to report other awards (such as private scholarships) that aren’t listed on your award notice or to inform us that you are not enrolling for a given term.
- Financial Planning Calculators: See an estimate of your university bill and/or find out how much alternative loan or PLUS loan you are eligible to receive.*

If I'm asked to send documentation to Financial Aid where do I send it?
Scholars may be asked for additional documents as part of their financial aid application. It is suggested that scholars submit documents for SBSP and Fall/Winter aid at the same time. Documents can be mailed, faxed, or emailed to:

FAQs - Housing
How do I ensure my Housing contract is turned in?
To ensure that Housing has the necessary information, including your Housing contract, please contact them at email@example.com or 734-763-3164. They will be able to assist you further.
Can I choose my roommate?
Scholars are not able to submit a request for a specific roommate at this time. Scholars that have extenuating circumstances are able to submit a request, however submission does not guaranteed approval of the request. Scholars with extenuating circumstances should refer to University Housing's guidelines for roommate request here.
As our program is only seven weeks and scholars will have to move out of the residence hall before the start of the fall semester, we do recommend scholars bring their basic necessities to assist them during the summer term. We encourage you to learn more about the Alice Lloyd residence hall, standard room furnishings, and University Housing's What to Bring to Campus list before your arrival.

What do I need to complete in myGuide?
All Summer Bridge scholars will need to complete the following tasks in myGuide by June 15, 2019:

- LSA Requirements tour
- Academic interests survey
- Directed self-placement for writing
- Math placement test
- Sign the Summer Bridge Scholars Program contract
- Online Spanish Placement Test (for scholars who plan to take Spanish at U-M)

I'm having issues submitting or accessing the Math placement test. What do I do?
Please contact the Office of New Student Programs at email@example.com or 734-764-6413 to make sure that your uniqname is properly set up, and that you've entered in the placement testing roster.
Should I use a calculator or some other resource on the Math placement test?
It is recommended that you do not use a calculator or other resources when taking the Math placement test. The placement test is designed to measure scholars' familiarity with basic mathematical skills that are needed for different math courses U-M offers. Because of this, using a calculator will generally not help: a better score is obtained by knowing the material and working it all out by hand.
