Complex Systems is growing! We have doubled student credit hours over the last two years and this trend will continue as we have several new and exciting large capacity undergraduate courses. Luis Zaman is teaching CMPLXSYS 325 Memes, Measles and Misinformation (cap 100) for the first time this term and, you heard it here first, Complex Systems will be offering a true 100 level introductory course for the first time this fall CMPLXSYS 100 - Complexity: From Simple Rules to Complex Behavior. This course will have 150 seats. Our data science and modelling classes continue to be extremely popular. We also rolled out a mini-course that uses Python to introduce students to social science data analysis CMPLXSYS 351 - Introduction to Social Science Data. A general recognition that systems thinking is necessary for students to be successful, along with recent recognition for the field of Complex Systems with the most recent Physics Nobel prize being awarded to three laureates who work within Complex Systems, has our Center poised for continued growth and impact.
Three Funds
We are featuring our three funds this Giving Blueday: The Charlie Doering Strategic Fund; The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund; and The Complex Systems Gift Account. You can read about them below, and on our Giving Blueday page - which will become live on March 15, at 12:01am.
The Charlie Doering Strategic Fund
This fund is just over a year old - established after the terribly sad passing of our wonderful Director, Charlie Doering in 2021. With donations from his extensive community of friends, colleagues and family members, and a generous 'top off' gift from his beloved Paula Doering, the fund has received endowed status. We have a lofty goal for this fund - to eventually support a Charlie Doering Postdoctoral Fellowship. While we are building toward this goal, we are able to provide an amount of post-doctoral funding. Charlie was a devoted teacher and scholar who believed postdoctoral fellows were an important complement to our core faculty. This would be such a wonderful way to honor his legacy.
The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund
The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund was set up in honor of another invaluable (and founding!) member of our Center. Rick also left us too soon and was a huge loss to the academic community and to the innumerable students to which he taught the art and science of agent-based modeling. With the establishment of the endowed fund, the Center for the Study of Complex Systems offers an annual Undergraduate Research Prize. Each year we are able to celebrate Rick's legacy as we solicit award applicants and evaluate the submissions. We just announced the second recipient of the annual RRMF undergraduate research prize. As this fund grows, we plan to increase the price award from $1,000 to $2,000 with the option to give a second place prize if the selection committee warrants.
The Complex Systems Gift Account
This fund supports the full range of Center activities. Gifts to this account are not limited to specific prizes or postdoctoral support. This fund allows the maximum flexibility to direct funds to advance the goals of our Center in the most effective way possible. Do not underestimate the Complex Systems Gift Fund!
Gifts to this fund will advance the science of complex systems by supporting interdisciplinary studies and agent-based modeling on dynamic systems, as well as our undergraduate minor, graduate certificate, seminar series, and special events.
