The numbers are not yet finalized! But first things first - a HUGE and heartfelt thank you to all that donated to the Charlie Doering Strategic Fund on Giving Blueday, prior, and since! We are off to a great start.
As you may have heard, or experienced yourself when trying to donate during Giving Blueday - the site went down several times throughout the day, for extended periods of time. We had focused on the 4-5pm Power Hour, and even though the site went down, we have received confirmation that we will get the extra $1,000 for that period! Thank you to so many that kept trying ! Amounts received after that were counted as well for the prize calculations.
As mentioned, due to the technical difficulties on the day - we still do not have final numbers from LSA regarding any other extra funds we may be entitled to. We are, however, continuing to collect for and build the Charlie Doering Strategic Fund through the month of April. We are already at approximately $15,000!! - boosted by new donations that are still coming in.
We also would like to give another example of the strength and bond of the UM Complex Systems community. On Giving Blueday we received more donations for the Rick Riolo Memorial Fund! We would like to thank Michael Bommarito who helped establish the RRMF endowment back in 2018 (and for donating generously to BOTH the RRMF and the CDSF this year!). We would also like to give a special shout out to Sarah Cherng who gave an extremely generous gift to the RRMF this year. In her words:
“Rick set such a uniquely high standard for kind, patient, and generous mentorship that has contributed to the growth of students fortunate enough to have encountered him at the University of Michigan. I'm more than happy to support new undergraduates exploring complex systems methods, and have great hope that this fund can continue to provide opportunities to think about the world in new and different ways. It's genuinely a small token for the ways in which Rick has influenced my thinking and my life.”
Even this past week we have received additional money for the Rick Riolo Memorial Fund and another extremely generous donation of $5,000 to the Charlie Doering Strategic Fund. Hopefully by the Charlie Doering Memorial Symposium on May 26 we will be able to announce final numbers, though we will continue to grow the Charlie Doering Strategic Fund through the year.

Until we reach the $25,000 minimum to create an endowed fund, we will give away small portions of gifts to the Charlie Doering Strategic Fund to support Complex Systems student development including travel to professional conferences. Once we reach $25,000, the endowment income will support the work and retention of postdoctoral fellows. If we reach the amount required to fully fund a permanent postdoctoral position, we will then announce the Charlie Doering Postdoctoral Fellowship. We will need major gifts to reach this long-term goal but we are confident in the ultimate success of this endeavor.
