What is Giving Blueday?

According to Wikipedia "Giving Tuesday, often stylized as #GivingTuesday for purposes of hashtag activism, refers to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the United States. It is a movement to create an international day of giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season."

Many non-profit organizations have started their own Giving Tuesday campaigns. Giving 'BLUE'day is the University of Michigan's adaptation of Giving Tuesday.  From the University Giving Blueday Website:  ONE DAY. ALL OF US.  SUPPORT WHAT YOU ♥ ABOUT U-M. WHAT WILL YOU DO IN ONE DAY?

A HISTORY OF IMPACT

The ongoing success of Giving Blueday is credited to the exceptional participation from the global Michigan family, who support their U-M passions by making gifts of all sizes or by spreading the word to their social networks.

Each year, more donors have generously contributed even more dollars, proving that when the U-M family joins together, they can have an enormous impact. In 2014, Giving Blueday exceeded everyone’s expectations by raising $3.2 million from 5,437 donors in the first year. Last year, on Giving Blueday 2017, we raised $4.4 million, with donations from over 8,200 donors from around the world.

Student participation on Giving Blueday has continued to rise, growing from 80 organizations the first year to more than 120 student organizations raising funds for their causes in 2017. New donors have continued to step up each year as well, with over 2,000 new donors each year on Giving Blueday. Each and every victor showing how much can be done when we all come together to make a difference!

How does it work?

Each unit that is participating in UM Giving Blueday will have their own webpage that will start accepting donations at 12:00 am on Tuesday, November 27, 2018.  There are various matching programs through the University and LSA specifically - a Student matching program and first time donor matching program - that will take place throughout the day as well as hourly challenges, etc..  Check out the University of Michigan Giving Blueday website for more information.

How does the Complex Systems 'Rick Riolo Memorial Fund'
Giving Blueday work?

As the Rick Riolo Memorial Fund (RRMF) has just been established (read "Announcing the Rick Riolo Memorial Fund") Complex Systems will be collecting money exclusively on this Giving Blueday for the new RRMF.  To further introduce the RRMF, there will be a special Kick Off lecture by Scott Page on the same day - November 27 at 11:30 in West Hall Room 411 followed by a light reception.  The talk is being given in honor of Rick Riolo to celebrate the inception of this fund.  Dr. Page has also generously donated copies of his brand new book The Model Thinker: What You Need To Know To Make Data Work For You (2018 Basic Books) to be gifted to those who make a contribution of $100 or more to the Rick Riolo memorial fund.  Either at the lecture, or during the hour following (1:00-2:00pm) online.

All donations to the fund on Giving Tuesday are collected online on the Rick Riolo Memorial Fund Page.  Their will be  laptops available at the lecture to access the donation site, if needed.

Donations will be accepted on the page all day.
