Mita retired on October 2, 2023, right after the conclusion of the 20th Anniversary IGERT Reunion and Complex Systems Celebration Conference which took place September 28th and 29th. This was a fitting closure to the circle of her time here at Complex Systems.
Mita came on board during the Center's early years under the leadership of former Director, Carl Simon. Her initial assignment was managing the $3.4 million IGERT grant awarded by the NSF (co-written by Carl Simon, Scott Page, and Bob Axelrod). This funding supported over 40 doctoral students over a period of 10 years, and increased the role, visibility and impact of the Center. Mita’s skilled oversight made this growth possible.
As CSCS flourished, Mita assumed the roles of Chief Administrator and Student Services liaison. She attributes her long-standing dedication in this role - to the dynamic, innovative personalities of the faculty members at the Center.
Throughout her tenure, the Complex Systems offices transitioned from Randall Lab, to the 3rd floor of West Hall, and finally, in 2017, to the 7th floor of Weiser Hall. Mita championed these progressions, while dealing with sad transitions resulting from the loss of key figures in Complex Systems as we lost: John Holland, Rick Riolo, and recently, our beloved Charlie Doering during this time. Throughout, Mita remained a reliable pillar, known for her unwavering positivity and signature smile.
We will miss you, Mita!
