Jennifer Wallace will discuss a pre-circulated chapter from her forthcoming book for Bloomsbury, Witnessing Tragedy Since 9/11. Tragedy offers us a tradition, a mode of thinking, for seeking to make intelligible events, political decisions, wars, and revolutions. What would it mean to analyze tragedies in the world with as much serious critical attention as we have devoted so many times before to the canon of classical tragedy? Jennifer Wallace is author of The Cambridge Introduction to Tragedy (2007), Digging the Dirt: The Archaeological Imagination (2004), Shelley and Greece: Rethinking Romantic Hellenism (1997), and co-editor of The Oxford History of the Classical Reception of English Literature 1780-1880. She has published numerous articles in classical reception studies, as well as as fiction and journalism.
