Honors Program

The Honors Program provides Women’s Studies and Gender and Health majors the opportunity to complete a comprehensive, original research project as a culmination of their undergraduate studies. The  thesis is researched and written during the students’ junior and senior years under the guidance of a Women's Studies faculty member. Theses can take a number of forms, including activism work, research projects, or creative/performance pieces, but all projects include a significant piece of scholarly writing.

Students considering honors are encouraged to begin discussing their interests with a Women’s Studies or Gender and Health departmental advisor during their sophomore year. The honors application is due mid-November of students’ junior year, and the program begins in the subsequent semester.

Students whose undergraduate work has involved a significant amount of civic or co-curricular engagement should also consider pursuing Honors in Engaged Liberal Arts (HELA) through LSA's Honors Program. HELA allows students to design a community-engaged project rather than write a traditional thesis.

How to Apply

Students in the class of 2021 should submit the honors application available on the Women’s Studies website and related materials by Nov. 18. Materials required for the application include:

  • A copy of your academic transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
  • A brief description of your proposed thesis, up to one page. This can be a tentative idea of what you would like to do your your thesis.
  • A paper written for a class at UM that represents your best work (ideally a minimum of 7 pages in 12 point font, double spaced)

The application will be reviewed by the faculty members of the Women’s Studies Undergraduate Committee.  Students will be notified of the decision within three weeks of submission of the materials.
