In a New York Times op-ed published Monday, September 11, Women's Studies professor Tiya Miles comments that slavery's legacy is not limited to the South, and that ostensibly "free" cities such as Detroit remain marked by its effects. Professor Miles, a 2011 MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient whose scholarship focuses on women's, African American, and Native American history, will release her new book, The Dawn of Detroit: A Chronicle of Slavery and Freedom in the City of Straits, on October 3.
