LGBTQ and Sexuality Studies Minor

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer (LGBTQ) and Sexuality Studies minor offers students an interdisciplinary approach to the study of sexuality. Coursework allows students to examine religious beliefs, legal codes, medical constructions, and social movements that are historically variable and culturally specific. With the contributions of empirical research, feminist scholarship, and queer theory, the minor acquaints students with the history of sexuality and the formation of sexual identities and sexuality.

Students might be interested in the Lesbian-Gay-Queer Research Initiative at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender or the Spectrum Center

The LGBTQ and Sexuality Studies minor requires students to take five courses totalling at least 15 credits. Students are encouraged to consult with a department advisor for additional information, and should consult the worksheet for minor requirements when planning their program.

Foundational Course

All minors are required to take a course that familiarizes them with the with LGBTQ history and scholarship.

Students choose one of the following to fulfill this requirement:

  • WGS 245: Introduction to LGBTQ + Studies
  • WGS 265: Introduction to Transgender Studies (formerly WGS 258: Topics in SS: Introduction to Transgender Studies)
  • WGS 295: Sexuality in Western Culture

Electives that focus on LGBTQ and sexuality topics are used to fulfill the minor's remaining credits. No more than two electives can be at the 200 level, and at least one course must be at the 400 level.

Please consult the links to the right for information about which courses count towards this requirement.

A Note Regarding LSA Minor Policies

Students may use only one course to meet requirements for both a major and minor. Courses in the minor may, however, be used for LSA distribution requirements (SS, HU, etc.). Please see the LSA policies on academic minors for more information.
