The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) has engaged undergraduate students in research, scholarly, and creative inquiry for 30 years.  UROP encourages students towards a life-long appreciation for discovery and the social benefits of diversity, for building understanding across differences, and critically examining information in the world around them. By providing opportunities for students to work on research and creative projects with University of Michigan researchers and community partners in all academic disciplines, UROP creates conditions for an equitable, inclusive, and supportive educational environment where every person feels valued and has an opportunity to add value.

What do gifts to this fund do?

Gifts to UROP allow us to support more students who often do not have the financial means to engage in a research opportunity, especially during our summer fellowship programs. The funds allow us to expand our programming and provide scholarships for need-based students to travel and present at national conferences. UROP started in 1988, with a focus on underrepresented students (15 students). The program now serves 1300 undergraduate students in all academic disciplines/schools. Gifts provide equitable student access for underrepresented, first-generation, and low socio-economic background students to engage in opportunities that would not be readily available without this support.

Why donate and why donate now?

Donate now and we can admit and support more diverse and financial need-based students to our 2019 Summer Research Fellowships. Summer applications are due in January and over 65% of our students are low-income students, many of whom are first-generation and/or community college students with no access to undergraduate research at their respective schools. Furthemore, we teach our students to be active participants in the community. Gifts allow us to grow our Summer Detroit Community-Based Research Program and work with more non-profit organizations on community needs. Lastly, we would be able to provide need-based student grants for Winter 2019.
