We are photographing specimens collected in the Great Lakes region over the past century and a half to investigate coal consumption and environmental policy during this time period. With photographs of specimens we can analyze luminance data from within the images to calculate the relative amount of soot covering each bird. The result is a dataset that tracks environmental soot through time.
