Hunter Muirhead, who did an honor’s thesis in anthropology at the University of Michigan, is living in Elabuga, Tatarstan, Russia, where he is teaching English. He sent a photo (above) of a local archaeological site known as “Shaytan’s Tower,” which he explains is the remnant of a Volga Bulgarian fort built just prior to the Golden Horde period of the region.
