Technology for Exams

TAC Technology

The TAC subscribes to the National College Testing Association (NCTA) Professional Standards and Guidelines to ensure test integrity and security. Our current policy ensures that we are administering tests based on approved accommodations, that technology does not have the potential to modify an instructor's essential course requirements, or potentially give a student an unfair advantage.

In order to use specific technology provided by the TAC, the device, software or application must:

  • be listed as an accommodation on the VISA letter.
  • not require a personal login.
  • not require Internet connectivity.

BE AWARE!: We cannot guarantee the use of a prefered computer. Students are required to know how to use both iMacs and PCs if they are to test at the TAC. Please contact the Knox Center if you need assistance with training for using any needed technology.

A student must have:

  • approval from Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) as seen on the Verified Individualized Services and Accommodations (VISA) letter.
  • indication that technology will be used for the exam as submitted on the TAC Reservation by the course instructor.

NOTE: Please see Personal Technology policy below.

Available TAC Technology

  • PC desktop computers

NOTE: The following equipment does not have internet connectivity.

NOTE: Limited quantities available. Reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.

Requesting Technology Not Currently Available at the TAC

Students requesting the use of specific hardware and/or software, not currently available at the TAC, must understand the following:

  • The hardware, software or application must have exclusive features directly related to an impairment.
  • The hardware, software, or application must be approved by a student’s Coordinator in SSD and documented as a test accommodation as seen on the VISA letter.
  • The hardware, software, or application must not require a personal login.
  • The hardware, software, or application must not require Internet connectivity.
  • The equipment is a reasonable accommodation provided by the University as determined and approved by SSD.
  • The equipment is an approved item for purchase by SSD and/or the TAC.
  • The equipment can be realistically installed by the exam date.

NOTE: There is never a guarantee that requested hardware or software can be provided by the TAC.

If TAC technology including a device, software, or application does not meet the specifications above, please see the Personal Technology policy below.

Personal Technology vs. Technology as a Test Material

Personal Technology (student brings to TAC)

Personal Technology is technology devices (laptops, tablets, smart phones and watches, USB/Flash Drives, etc.) that are approved by the instructor for all students in the reservation to use on an exam and must be clearly indicated in the “Materials” section under “4. Test Preferences."

NOTE: If only one student in the reservation has approval for Personal Technology it needs to be indicated in"3. Student/s" under the specific student's name.

Technology as a Test Material (instructor delivers to TAC)

Technology as a Test Material is technology that is approved by the instructor on the reservation as needed for the exam. This technology must be delivered by the professor and will be available for pick up with the exams. These must be listed on "3. Materials" in the "Other" section on the reservation.

NOTE: If only one student in the reservation has approval for Technology as a Test Material, it needs to be indicated in "3. Student/s" under the specific student's name.

If Personal Technology or Technology as a Test Material is approved, the TAC will not be responsible for:

  • uploading, downloading, and/or printing to or from these devices.
    • If an instructor chooses to have the exam saved to a flash drive, they must leave detailed instructions for the student on the reservation and must deliver it with the exam. The instructor will need to print the exam from the flash drive on their own time and in their own office.
  • making arrangements for these devices.
  • picking up these devices outside of the TAC.
  • returning these devices outside of the TAC.
  • verifying any content on the these devices before or after the exam.
  • verifying whether the these devices have Wi-Fi or internet connectivity and/or whether the student has utilized it.
  • verifying or monitoring the use of messaging from the devices.
  • verifying whether the student has utilized unapproved applications or software on these devices.
  • test integrity being compromised because of the use of these devices.
  • answering questions or triaging connectivity issues related to these devices.

NOTES:

  • If you need assistance with uploading, downloading, or printing from the tecnology, please contact your department's ITS staff.
  • If you need assistance understanding adaptive technology needs for your students, please contact Jane Berliss-Vincent in the Knox Center at Sites.Knox@umich.edu.
  • If these devices have been approved for an exam, the student will NOT have access to TAC technology.
  • Students may not bring carrying cases or any bag used for the equipment into the testing area.
  • If technology is checked out from Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), it would be considered one of these two types of technologies and would need to be approved by the instructor on the reservation.

Online Exams and Quizzes

ALERT!

We will be suspending all online exams requiring students to utilize personal technology at the Testing Accommodation Center effective Spring 2019.

Many online exams require DUO authentication which allows students access to their cell phones. In order to maintain test integrity and security, we cannot administer online exams at this time. We are working diligently with IT staff on determining solutions to navigate two-factor authentication issues with exams at the TAC.

We will continue to have TAC computers available to students who have the use of a computer on their VISAs as a test accommodation. Please understand that TAC computers do not have access to the Internet and cannot access online exams. For all other students, we can only administer paper/pencil exams. We will update our website and the TAC reservation as new information becomes available.

If you have students needing test accommodations, and you are administering an online exam, please make arrangements for your students outside of the TAC. Thank you for your understanding.
