The English Composition Board/Sweetland Center for Writing:
A History by George Cooper
George Cooper taught writing at Universtiy of Michigan for more than 25 years during which he lived much of the history he writes about here. That there is a worthwhile history at all Cooper likes to attribute to Fred Newton Scott who directed his own Department of Rhetoric at Michigan from 1903-1927 and whose rich and generous approach to teaching rhetoric and composition continues to find expression in the Sweetland Center for Writing.
