Middle school constitutes a formative developmental stage in one’s sexuality. Middle school students (ages 10-14) first formally and intentionally engage with their sexual subjectivities as they experience puberty and sexual education. However, sociologists largely neglect this life stage. Researchers have explored the sexual behaviors of high school students, as well the explicit and hidden sexual curricula of high school. Others have examined the role of sexuality and gender in childhood peer cultures. Studies of childhood sexuality have even extended to preschoolers. This literature overlooks salient middle school experiences, thus compromising overall understandings of sexual development. I intend to write a dissertation that addresses this gap (i.e. sexuality education in early adolescence) but need to reformulate my first idea, as it was ultimately unfeasible. I am now reworking my dissertation idea and, in doing so, need a better sense of the current research in my field in order to identify more specific gaps and spark ideas. The student's work will help me to get an initial sense of the most current research so I can use it as a jumping off point for my own review of the literature.
Research Assistant Duties: The student will use databases to find the most recent research relating to my subject. They will look at any articles relating to sexuality education, focusing on those relating to adolescence. They will then read and abstract the articles. These duties incorporate learning components including: how to find a body of literature, and how to identify main ideas, as well as their connections.
