Juniors

Gain experience and make intentional decisions!

As you navigate the second half of your undergraduate career, think about which 300-level or higher SOC elective courses you want to take to round out your intellectual development and mastery of the discipline (14 upper-level electives are required for the major), but don't forget about the three required courses (SOC 210 or STATS 250, SOC 305, and SOC 310)! Required courses should be completed by the first semester of your senior year. If you have questions about your progress or LSA Audit Checklist, schedule an advising appointment to check in on requirements and major planning.

Consider experiential learning through Project Community, SURO, or Intergroup Dialogue facilitation. Seriously consider applying to the Senior Thesis + Honors Program in Sociology in the first term of your junior year. If you are in the SSW sub-major, consider applying to the MSW program in winter term of your junior year.

Students in their third year of study often use the winter or summer term to study abroad. Be sure to talk with the department advisor about your study abroad semester if you plan to take courses for your major while abroad.

It's time to start making actionable career or graduate school plans to achieve your post-graduation goals. Read through our Career Guide and create your own career development checklist. The Career Center and LSA Opportunity Hub are excellent resources for students in all stages of their internship search and career exploration; you don't need to know exactly what you want to do before you see a career advisor. In fact, not knowing is a good reason to go! The centers hosts a variety of career expos and information fairs to help you explore.
