The Rackham Graduate School has announced awards for the best dissertations defended across all the University's disciplines in 2013.  The highest award given to UM graduate students, less than ten dissertations are recognized with the Proquest Distinguished Dissertation Awards each year.  

 

 

We are pleased to announce that Yan Long (Sociology & Women's Studies Ph.D. 2013) and Kerry Ard (Sociology & Natural Resources and Environment Ph.D. 2013) have received this well-deserved recognition for their dissertations.  

Yan Long's dissertation was titled Constructing Political Actorhood: The Emergence and Transformation of the AIDS Movement in China, 1989-2009.  Professor Elizabeth Armstrong and Professor Wang Zheng (Women's Studies) were co-chairs of her dissertation committee.   Long is currently a postoctoral fellow at the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University.  

Kerry Ard's dissertation was titled Changes in Exposure to Industrial Air Pollution Across the United States from 1995 to 2004: The Role of Race, Income and Segregation).  Professor Sarah Burgard was chair of her dissertation committee.  Ard is currently assistant professor of environmental and natural resource sociology at Ohio State University.

All members of the U-M community are invited to attend the awards ceremony on April 29, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall on the fourth floor of the Rackham Building.  This will be immediately followed by a reception.
