Applying to SID

Program Eligibility:

The Semester in Detroit program accepts undergraduate students from all schools and departments at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Completion of the fall program plus one additional required course will meet the requirements for a minor in Urban Studies through the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the UM-Ann Arbor campus. Spring students are required to take 2 additional courses to complete the Urban Studies minor.

The most successful program participants typically have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA [Note: those with less than a 3.0 GPA are still eligible to apply but must explain their particular situation.] Applicants should have a strong interest in the city of Detroit and in community-service learning.

Application Process:

The deadlines for 2019 programs have passed. Check back in August for sp/su and fall 2020 application details.

For Recommenders:

The letters should speak to why the student would be a good fit for an intensive Urban Studies immersion experience (including an internship, rigorous academic courses, etc.)

Please include name and title, University department, phone number, e-mail address. Note: one is required, two are preferred. Your recommendations may be professional or academic, but they should speak well to your capabilities and character. If you choose to only submit one letter, it must be an academic reference. If you are a first-year student, recommendations from high school teachers and mentors are acceptable.

Please ask recommenders to email in their letters to:

If recommenders would prefer to mail the letter, they can send it to:
