Semester in Detroit is now accepting online applications from U-M undergraduate students (sophomore or higher) from any school or college who are interested in spending the winter 2013 semester in the city of Detroit.  This ever-important American city provides a dynamic and challenging opportunity for U-M undergraduate students to learn about both the plight and the potential of urban communities in the 21st century.

This U-M academic urban immersion program, now beginning its fifth academic year, will accept only 25 students who will live on Wayne State University's campus, take classes at the U-M Detroit Center taught by U-M Ann Arbor Faculty, and intern with a Detroit non-profit community organization, elected official, school, or small business.

The program has become well-received in the Detroit community: over 50 Detroit community organizations apply each year for the opportunity to host U-M students as interns, including: Detroit Eastern Market Corporation, Focus Hope, Alternatives for Girls, Pewabic Pottery, Detroit City Council and many more.

During the spring of 2011, Detroit City Councilwoman Saunteel Jenkins awarded the Semester in Detroit program with a City Council Resolution providing public acknowledgment that the program and its students were making a positive contribution to the city.

Semester in Detroit will accept applications online from interested U-M undergraduate students until the final deadline, October 26, 2012.  Students who apply by the early application deadline - October 1, 2012 - will be given priority consideration for admittance into the program and may be selected for a $1000 program scholarship.
