Department Funding Priorities
As part of the LSA Victors for Michigan campaign, the Psychology department has developed funding priorities. To read about all of our campaign funding priorities, please read the Department of Psychology's funding priorities PDF.
Opportunities For Giving
A gift is a personal gesture, reflecting the loyalty, the affection and the interests of the giver. Sometimes they reflect loyalty built during an experience as a student, researcher, member of the faculty or staff.
Gifts may express gratitude for a particular experience, for the department in general, or for an individual mentor, instructor, student, staff member, faculty member, or colleague.
Or a gift may come as a result of a desire to see progress made in a particular area of research. Our website provides information about the research interests of our faculty and potential donors may find particular themes of research ripe for funding.
About the Funds
Highlighted below are our funds that are in the most need of support from Alumni and Friends. There are many avenues to support the Department of Psychology, and all gifts are appreciated.
Psychology Undergraduate Student Research Fund
Well over 500 Psychology undergraduate students engage in research projects with faculty every year and many report that doing research was one of the most valuable experiences during their undergraduate years. Contributions to the Undergraduate Student Research Fund will help support these projects by covering the costs for summer internships, research supplies, travel to research sites, scientific poster and publication costs and other costs associated with cutting-edge research.
Your generous support will help our students build their research skills and improve their readiness for competitive graduate programs, jobs in industry and other professional career paths.
Psychology Graduate Student Support Funding
Graduate students collaborate with faculty-led research teams and play a vital role in scientific research and discovery. Contributions to the Graduate Student Research Fund provide support for summer fellowship, additional training opportunities, travel to research sites, attendance at scientific meetings, dissertation research, and other costs associated with cutting-edge research.
Your generous support will help us recruit and retain top-notch young scientists and prepare them to chart the future of psychological science.
Psychology for Service Learning Fund
Thanks to a generous donation by Rich and Gwen Schwabauer a new fund was created for service learning opportunities for undergraduate students in psychology. Rich Schwabauer is the owner of NBS Commercial Interiors in the Detroit area.
This fund will provide support for undergraduate students exploring career interests in community service with particular populations. The fund allows the Psychology Department to partner with community support programs in Detroit and Washtenaw County, as well as community schools at which Psychology Department undergraduates mentor and tutor children from troubled circumstances.
Gifts to this fund will allow the department to continue to provide undergraduates with the opportunity to explore careers in community service while implementing programs that are proven to make a difference in the lives of children and other populations in the community.
Psychology Strategic Fund
Overall, this fund is an excellent way to make an investment in the future of the Department of Psychology.
The ability to respond in a timely manner is critical to any organization. The strategic fund provides resources for the department's focused initiatives such as:
- The creation of new undergraduate courses
- Purchase of specialized equipment for new courses
- Focused response to innovative opportunities to build on faculty talents, such as joint/interdisciplinary hires with Women's Studies, School of Engineering, and Neuroscience.
- Recruitment and retention of the best faculty and graduate students through the development of new research projects. (New projects need pilot data that is often not eligible for federal and nonfederal grant support.)
The strategic fund provides resources for the department's focused initiatives and provides support for undergraduates, graduates, faculty, and staff.
Wilbert (Bill) J. McKeachie Discretionary Fund
