Community of Queer Political Scientists (CQPS)
- CQPS is a forum for political scientists to support the academic and professional environment for queer people in the Department and the discipline more broadly.
- CQPS provides a forum for discussion among gender and sexuality minority groups in the department and the discipline, and provides a platform for advocacy on their behalf, including their recruitment and retention.
- CQPS hosts discussions among the department's queer community twice a semester, and sponsors occasional distinguishing to highlight the contributions of LGBTQ political scientists.
- CQPS collaborates with its sibling organizations in the department (GAPS, PSOC, and Women's Caucus) to promote underrepresented groups and their important contributions to the department and the discipline.
Graduate Association of Political Scientists (GAPS)
GAPS exists to improve the life of graduate students in the University of Michigan’s Department of Political Science. To this purpose, GAPS
- works with faculty to make graduate student concerns heard and addressed, particularly in respect to:
- curriculum development
- faculty hiring
- technological services
- research opportunities
- engenders a positive climate for students of all races, creeds, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities
- encourages professional development, for both academic and non-academic careers
- eases first-years’ transition to graduate student life
- facilitates communication between different graduate student organizations
- promotes a culture of participation
- increases student awareness of existing UM and departmental resources
- helps develop collegial relations between graduate students, and between graduate students, faculty, and staff
- works to make UM the top political science department, including assisting in recruitment efforts
Political Scientists of Color (PSOC)
The purpose of Political Scientists of Color (PSOC) is to provide a network of political scientists interested in creating and maintaining a supportive academic and professional environment in the Department of Political Science regardless of race or ethnic background. PSOC seeks to foster a sense of community among political science graduate students of color at the University of Michigan and to advocate their concerns and interests on campus and in the community at-large. As such, this organization sponsors several department-wide professional development meetings and events that will help enable students to pursue a successful career in the field of political science. PSOC also advocates for the recruitment and retention of graduate students and faculty of color in the department. Additionally, our organization is active in hosting distinguised guest speakers, with the goal of increasing the awareness of the university community to the many contributions of scholars of color to the discipline. We happily hosted Melynda J. Price, J.D, Ph.D., from the University of Kentucky in March 2014 as part of the Hanes Walton, Jr. Distinguished Speaker Series.

Women's Caucus is an organization that offers monthly brown bag
lunches with women professors and women graduate students to discuss
the difficulties of academia for women and strategies for being
successful and coordinates frequent meetings among the women graduate
students to provide support and networking opportunities.
