Please join Dr. Nazarewicz at the reception prior to his lecture, 3:30 PM in 337 West Hall.

Lecture Title: The Limits of the Nuclear Landscape

Abstract: Understanding atomic nuclei is a quantum many-body problem of incredible richness and diversity and studies of nuclei address some of the great challenges that are common throughout modern science. In his lecture, Dr. Nazarewicz will review the advances in physics with nuclei in the context of main scientific questions. He will give particular attention to the science of rare isotopes and to theoretical studies of nuclei at the eve of extreme-scale computing.

Biography

Dr. Witold Nazarewicz has been a Professor of Physics at both the University of Tennessee and Warsaw University, Poland. He is also a Distinguished R & D Staff at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Physics Division. He is also a member of the Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research directorate. From 1999 to 2011, he served as the Scientific Director of the ORNL Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility, guiding the program to many experimental breakthroughs in the areas of rare isotopes and nuclear astrophysics. He has held several visiting positions, including professorships at Lund University, the University of Cologne, Kyoto University, and the University of Liverpool.

Dr. Nazarewicz is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the U.K. Institute of Physics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
