At a Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics (MCTP) workshop held on the Ann Arbor campus this week, participant Dr. Enectali Figueroa-Feliciano (MIT) expanded on the announcement made last weekend regarding signs of dark matter.

Dr. Figueroa-Feliciano is part of the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS), a group which hunts for dark matter particles from the depths of a Minnesota mine. He relayed that the group saw possible signs of dark matter as three events recorded by eight silicon detectors may represent collisions from weakly interacting massive particles, or WIMP's. WIMP's could explain dark matter as they do not emit light but interact with the universe through their gravity. Hints of WIMPs have been found by physicists but remain elusive.

University of Michigan MCTP organizers Professors Aaron Pierce, Gordon Kane, Katherine Freese, and Kathryn Zurek provided the workshop to bring together theorists and experimentalists working in the area of light dark matter to discuss theories and techniques for its discovery, both terrestrially and astrophysically.
