Speaker: Seo Ho Youn

The laser cooling and trapping of the most magnetic fermionic atom, dysprosium (Dy), may provide a framework to explore quantum liquid crystal (QLC) theory. In this talk, I present details of the Dy laser cooling and trapping apparatus that has produced a magneto-optically (MOT) and magneto-statically (MT) trapped Dy gas. I also discuss unique MOT/MT dynamics and the anisotropic sub-Doppler laser cooling of Dy. I conclude the talk with a discussion of our current exciting status of the Dy experiment, including evaporative cooling and quantum degeneracy.
